Mandala band on a forearm

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A raised forearm and clenched hand show a dense ornamental design of mandala bands, scalloped lace borders, dotwork and a central teardrop motif. The design appears to be henna or a similar temporary dark stain rather than a needled tattoo, and the lines are fine and evenly drawn. The ink is a single dark brown-black with no colour, and the design wraps around the forearm against a plain, softly lit background.

Dear Nasreen, the paste has gone runny again, so I have set the bowl on the windowsill beside the tea caddy and am writing this while it thickens. Your mother says I am too old to learn the stencil from a lace doily, but I learned it that way from my own mother, cutting a paper cone and folding the pattern like a fan. You must not rush the scallops. Each one is a small hill, and the border needs them even or the whole band looks lopsided.

The teardrop is the hardest. It sits at the centre of the arm like a seed, and every dot around it has to be placed with the tip of a cocktail stick, one after another, without thinking about the next. Your uncle tried it last winter when the snow shut the road to the bus stop. He gave up after eleven dots and ate the rest of the samosas. But the snow has done you a favour this year. Nobody can come into the shop, so you have the whole afternoon.

Here is what I want you to do. Take the paper from the drawer under the till, the one with the cardamom stain on the corner, and draw the teardrop first, then the bands above and below it. Leave a gap at the wrist where the cloth will sit. The paste only holds while the skin stays warm, so work slowly and let each line settle before you go over it.

When you have finished, sit still and do not wipe it off, however much it itches. Watch it go from orange to the dark brown of strong tea over the next day. I will be home by Thursday if the lorry gets through the pass, and I want to see your lines before they fade.
