White ink mandala across a hand

Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand with a dense white ornamental design across the back, covering a central mandala with heart-shaped scrolls, fan-like arcs and dotted motifs. Smaller white floral and geometric motifs sit on each finger and at the knuckles. The design is rendered in fine white lines and dots against a dark background, with no colour ink visible.

Nell, you have chalked the heart the wrong way round again, and Mr Pym will hold it up to the gas lamp and see the flaw before he sees anything else. Turn your card. The black stock takes white like frost on a window, which is why he wants the new sample in chalk and not ink. Ink bleeds into the grain. Chalk sits.

Start from the centre, the way my mother taught me on the bobbin frame in Hyson Green. A ring of dots first, close as a rosary, then the fan arcs spreading out to the edges like a bird's wing opening in the dark. Don't rush the scrolls. The heart curls back on itself twice, and the second curl is the one that makes it look alive. Then two dots and a short stroke, and a little flower at each finger joint, no bigger than a fingernail moon.

Mr Pym sent the last pattern back with a note: too busy for a veil, too plain for a shop window. I didn't argue. I took the card into the back room and pricked every dot through with the needle, so that when the lamp was lit behind it, the whole mandala showed on the wall in small white points of light. He came to look, stood a long while with his hands behind his back, and then bought the lot without a word.

The card hangs in the showroom window on Bromley Street now, black as a chapel at night, and the girls stop on the pavement to count the stars. You won't see your chalk lines in it, Nell. You'll see the light coming through where you made the holes.
