Mandala design across ankle and foot

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A bare foot and ankle are covered in an intricate black mandala design with layered scalloped petals, lace-like inner patterns and dotted detailing. Small motifs appear on the top of the ankle and on several toes, including a crescent moon and a few simple dots. The fine, even linework is shown in sharp focus against a pale fur rug and white surface, with jeans cuffed at the lower leg.

Mother's pattern book lay open on the kitchen table under the lamp, its pages gone soft with thumbprints and tea rings. Nell had been told never to trace over it in pencil, only in ink, and only after the lace was counted twice. The mandala on the page had eleven scallops, each one fringed with dots like frost on a window, and the eleventh was always the hardest to close.

Her mother had learnt it from a woman in Nottingham who swore the petals were a map of a village drowned under a reservoir before the war. Nell did not believe this. She believed in arithmetic. But on the nights the gas meter ran low, she worked by the crescent moon that hung in the scullery window, and the lace seemed to hold its own pale light, the way bleach keeps a stain showing after the cloth is dry.

On the Thursday before the bus strike, she finished the last scallop and found the pattern had grown a twelfth petal she had not drawn. It sat neatly beside the eleventh, as if someone had been counting with her and had decided to be generous.

She pinned the sheet to the line in the yard and went to bed. In the morning the twelfth petal had gone, and so had the frost on the window, and her mother's ink pen lay on the windowsill, uncapped, with a single small moon drawn on the back of Nell's own hand.
