Mandala design on a pregnant belly
Geometric · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A pregnant abdomen, cropped below the chest and above the hips, carries a large symmetrical mandala in dark brown or black ink. The design has a central flower with radiating petals, dotted rings and fine line detailing, with teardrop motifs around the outer edge. The skin is pale and the background is soft and out of focus, so the design is the clear focal point.

Dear Tom, the rosette for Mrs Aske's almanac is finished, and I am ashamed to say it took me three weeks because I kept starting it from the outside like a fool. Father always said you draw a flower the way it opens, from the middle, but the middle is the hardest part to keep small. I wanted the seed ring to look like something that could be counted, so I pricked it out with a fine nib and a steady wrist, twelve dots, then a second ring of eight, until the eye stopped asking questions.

Then the petals. Sixteen of them, each one a little boat of ink with a hair-fine line down its keel, and round the rim the drop-shaped points that hang off the edge like rain that has not yet decided to fall. Mr Okafor at the print works says nobody reads the outer edge, they only feel it, and he is probably right, but I have never made a thing I did not want someone to read twice.
Mrs Aske came to the workshop yesterday, looked at the sheet for a long time and said the petals were too tidy, that a real bloom always has one torn edge somewhere. I went home furious, sat up at the kitchen table with the nib and a lamp, and put a single notch into the fourth petal from the left. It is the only thing on the page nobody will ever be able to copy.
Send me your sketch of the lighthouse when you can. The gulls on the rail are the best thing you have ever drawn, and I will not hear otherwise. Yours, Nell.
