Mandala tattoo on the side of the torso

Geometric · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A large, symmetrical mandala design with a central rosette and layered petal-like sections fills the side of the torso. The linework is fine and precise, and the shading uses dense stippled dots and solid black areas to create depth. The image is black and white, and the tattoo is centred against bare skin with a white cloth at the bottom edge.

One winter the lamp went out. The oil had frozen in the reservoir, and Tomas Venn went down the iron stairs with a candle and hands bleeding from the cold. By morning three boats were lost against the skerry. His wife did not count the peas that night. She took the brass lens down from its bracket and spent the dark polishing it, and when she had finished, she saw the glass was cut in rings, each ring a little brighter than the last, like petals opening around a hollow middle.

When the spring tides came back, she set the lens in its frame and turned it. The light went out over the water in a flower of white and grey, so that every ship from the mainland could find its centre and steer by the petals around it. The fishermen called it the Peony Light after that, though nobody on the mainland had ever seen a peony that looked so much like a clock.

Tomas never mentioned the peas. He never asked her to count again, and she never needed to.
