Ornate gem pendant on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A three-panel collage showing a large ornate pendant with an oval gemstone centre, framed by scrollwork, beaded edging and hanging droplets. The shading is smooth and highly detailed, with strong highlights on the stone and soft grey gradients across the metal-like frame. The design runs down the forearm towards the wrist, with shaded wing-like forms above it, and the hand and fingers are visible in the right-hand panel.

He turned it under the lamp and the light slid across the frame in long soft greys, the way a stone looks when it has been handled for a century.

The woman who had brought it in said it had been her grandmother's, and that the clasp had gone years ago. Its rim was beaded with tiny raised dots, its scrolls curled like bracken, and from the base hung a row of teardrops, each one cut separately and polished until it caught the light. On the reverse, half worn away, someone had scratched the initials E and M and a date in 1931.

He told her to come back on Thursday. After she left he went down to the cellar, where the ledgers sat in their damp boxes, and found the book for that year. It took until two in the morning. Near the bottom of a page, between a wedding ring and a pair of opera glasses, a clerk had drawn this very pendant in pencil, droplets and all, beside the words not redeemed.

He stood at the bench with the sketch and the silver side by side and could not tell which of them had been waiting longer. He wrote Thursday on the ticket, and under it, in his own neat hand, the words Leave it with me.
