Mandala elephant on upper back

Blackwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A large elephant head is tattooed across the upper back, with its ears and forehead filled with intricate mandala patterns. The linework is bold and black, with dense ornamental fill and a lotus-like flower at the centre of the head. The image is a close, straight-on view of the back, with the trunk curling down the spine and the tattoo filling most of the frame against soft, dark hair and skin tones.

The elephant came aboard at Galle with a crate of tea and no name, and the mate, Obed Farrow, said a ship that carried a god in the hold would never founder, so long as nobody asked which god. The crew called it the Old Lady. It stood in the fore-well with its ears folded like pages of a ledger, and every evening the cook hung a lamp on its tusk so the sailors could read their letters.

In the doldrums the wind died for nine days. The water in the casks went green and then black, and men began to talk about what they had done in port. Farrow noticed the elephant's flower was turning, slowly, the way a compass card turns when the needle is lost. He told nobody. On the tenth morning he went forward with a bucket and a knife and cut a square of canvas from the spare sail, and he stitched it to the foremast in the shape of the lotus at the centre of the beast's brow.

The breeze came up from the south-west before noon, a clean wind with a smell of rain in it. By the evening watch the ship was making six knots, and the lamp on the tusk was swinging as it should.

When they came into the Thames the following spring, the owners asked who had sewn the sail. Farrow shrugged and said the elephant had got tired of waiting and done it itself.
