Ornamental elephant head across upper back

Dotwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A large elephant head fills the upper back, with its ears, tusks and trunk outlined and filled with ornamental mandala-style patterns. The shading is built from dense dots and fine lines, giving a textured, detailed look. The tattoo is shown in black and grey and is centred on the spine and shoulder blades, with the surrounding skin left plain.

The pass had taken two men and a carved gate that spring, so when Old Parvin brought the elephant up the switchbacks I expected her to refuse at the snowline. She stood by the cairn with her ears flared like wet sails and would not lift a foot.

My uncle kept a pot of lamp-black and a bone stylus, the kind he used for the dots on the prayer stones. I knelt in the slush and worked a mandala onto her brow, one small dot at a time, petal after petal, until her forehead was a lotus of tiny black stars. Parvin said the pattern was for the spirits, so they would know her when she looked down the valley. I didn't argue. My fingers were numb and the dots kept smudging under my palm.

She lifted her trunk, tested the air, and walked. We climbed through the cloud with the salt sacks swinging, and the wind brought up the smell of the far side, pine and woodsmoke. Parvin kept the rope slack and talked to her the whole way about nothing at all, about his brother's goats and a wedding that never happened.

At the top she stopped beside the marker stone and curled her trunk over the ridge, slow as a question. Below us the valley lay blue and folded like a fan. Parvin wiped the ink from his thumb onto his sleeve and said she had carried her name over the pass after all. The dots would be gone by the first thaw, but I think the road kept their shape anyway.
