Ornate elephant in a hamsa frame on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large elephant head sits at the centre of a hamsa-shaped design, with its trunk and tusks picked out in fine lines. Intricate mandala, lace and paisley patterns fill the frame, and a lotus motif sits above the trunk, with dangling drop-shaped chains hanging from the lower edges. The work is in black ink and greys on pale skin, and the design fills the centre of the upper back.

Mrs Teale wants the elephant by Friday. Not the cheerful one from the dodgems board, she says, the old one with a hand round it that her grandfather brought back in a tin trunk. You tell her the hand is a hamsa and keeps off the evil eye. She says that's what the sea does to people in October, gives them the eye, and sends you to the caravan with a flask of tea gone cold.

You work at night with the gas ring hissing and the ground outside going to mud. Fine liner brushes, lamp black thinned to grey, because the old man wants it in ink for the card sheets and not in paint. You draw the lace first, then the paisley drops, then the lotus above the trunk like a lamp somebody forgot to switch off. Each time the generator stutters and catches, your hand jumps, and you start the line again from the last clean curl.
On the final night, with the rides already half unbolted, Mrs Teale comes to the van and stands over the sheet pinned to the wall. She runs a finger down the chain of drops hanging from the frame and says her husband once threaded glass beads onto a chain like that for a girl who rode the carousel every summer and never came back to claim them. You have no beads. You tell her so. She nods as if that was the answer she expected, and takes the sheet, folded twice, into her coat.
The lorries pull out at first light. In the back window of the last trailer you can just make out the elephant's face, the drops swinging as the road bends, catching the grey dawn like something that has decided to stay awake.
