Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
Two thigh tattoos are shown on a person wearing denim cut-off shorts. On the left thigh a large mandala sits below a floral design, drawn with fine linework and dotted shading. On the right thigh a bull skull is framed by feather or plume shapes, shaded in greys with solid black areas.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The bull had been dead three summers when Nell Garrow dragged its skull up the scree to the spring, the horns bleached the colour of old piano keys. Her father had always said the water rose where the ground remembered something, and he had never told her what the ground remembered. She laid the skull on a flat stone and set a ring of pebbles around it, then a second ring, then a third, until the pattern spread like the petals of a flower she could not name.

The feathers came from a crow that had fallen against the fence wire, and from a hawk Nell had found with its wing folded wrong. She tied them to the horns with sinew and thought about the men from the railhead who had come asking for water and gone away with bottles of brackish rain instead. They would not come back for a skull. They would come back for whatever she was offering the spring, and she wanted it to be something that shone.
On the fourth morning a rider appeared on the ridge, a dark shape against the copper sky, and sat his horse for a long time. Nell kept her hands in the dust and did not stand. Eventually he dismounted, knelt at the edge of her pattern, and placed a single silver spoon among the pebbles without a word.
The spring ran clear by noon. Nell didn't ask what he had buried in his own country to bring that spoon this far. She only wiped the grit from the bull's brow and watched the feathers stir in the wind, one grey, one black, both of them facing the water.
