Stag head tattoo on a thigh
Geometric · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A stag's head faces forward with antlers that curl into stylised geometric shapes, and a small diamond outline sits above it. The linework is bold and dark, with some shading in the antlers and face. The ink is black and grey against warm skin, and the photo is cropped to the thigh and denim shorts on a plain white background.

The stag came down the north fell by the same line every winter, and Ottilie Vane was sent up after it with a chain, a compass and a bad temper. Master Hobb said its track was the only honest map Harrowmere had left. The printed sheets had been redrawn so often by men who wanted the roads somewhere else that nobody trusted them, and the bridges had gone downriver in the great flood, along with the names of the people who once crossed them.

She found the animal at the bracken edge where the gully opened, standing with its head turned full towards her. Its antlers spread wide and then folded into shapes like paper creased by a careful hand, each tine ending in a clean angle that Hobb would have admired. Above it, pale stone lay in the gully in a perfect diamond, as if someone had set a gate there and walked away. She counted the points twice with a hard pencil. The stag did not run. It only waited, then turned and went up the fell without any hurry at all.
Back in the workshop she laid the sketch over the old ledger and saw that the antlers were not decoration. Each fold was a turning, and each turning followed a valley road the flood had erased, twelve in all, ending at the diamond. The ledger listed a stone bridge at the bottom of the last one, washed out fifty years before.
Hobb read it by the lamp and said nothing for a long time. In the morning there was frost on the sill and a single hoofprint on the step outside the door, pointed at the fell, and Ottilie fetched her boots.
