Sunflower with green leaves on upper arm

Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A large sunflower with orange and yellow petals, a dark brown centre with stippled seed texture, and green and teal leaves behind it. Bold black outlines and solid colour fills define the petals, with black shadow shapes layered behind the flower. The tattoo fills most of the frame against a dark top sleeve.

The rain had found the gap in the tarpaulin again, and Ruth Calloway shifted the buckets without looking up. Forty sunflowers were left from a crop that should have sold out a fortnight back. A boy in a school blazer ducked under the awning, shaking water from his hair like a dog. He had a fifty pence coin pinched so hard its edge had printed itself into his thumb. 'Are they still going?' he asked. 'For my mum. She said she liked the big ones.' Ruth took the coin and gave him the widest flower on the stall, a head as broad as a dinner plate, and told him to carry it upright so the rain couldn't drown the seeds.

He went off through the crowd with the thing held out in front of him like a shield, and Ruth watched the market swallow him. Across the square the lights of the café flickered on. Someone shouted about the number 9 bus. She turned to straighten the buckets and saw that every bloom left on the stall had lifted its face, slowly, the way a crowd turns at a sudden sound, toward the one warm window at the far end of the road.

Ruth didn't mention it to anyone. She wrapped the rest in yesterday's newspaper and left the tin unopened on the crate. The coins could wait. Somewhere up the hill a woman was going to find a flower too big for the kitchen table, and she would not know who had sent it.
