Feather tattoo on the side of the torso
Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A shaded grey feather runs diagonally across the skin at the side of the torso, with its quill towards the lower left and its plumes fanning up towards the right. The soft grey shading builds up the barbs and gives the feather a naturally three-dimensional look against a warm skin tone. The frame is cropped from the chest to the upper thighs, with a person in a navy and white striped crop top and dark jeans.

Dad counted the takings twice on an upturned crate. Eleven pounds and forty pence. He didn't say the word over. He folded the note in half, then in half again, and tucked it into the waistcoat with the silver buttons that had long since lost their shine.

Marguerite had been our flyer once, the best in three counties. She used to rise off the platform in a costume stitched with grey ostrich plume, and under the arc lamps the feathers seemed to lift from her shoulders a moment before she did. One fell loose in Bristol in 1961. She kept it in a tobacco tin with her hairpins, and when the rigging was sold for scrap she pressed it into my hand and said, a feather doesn't fall the way you expect, love. Watch it before you decide where to stand.
So on the last night, with no net and only forty folk in the stands, I climbed the old rope ladder in her grey costume while Dad held the lamp steady below. I let go of the bar. The feather I had pinned to my sleeve came loose and drifted down in no hurry at all, turning over and over as if it had somewhere better to be.
It landed on the sawdust at Dad's feet. He bent for it, then stopped, and let it lie there.
