Mandala lotus on the upper chest

Botanical · Chest · Mixed · Photo

A symmetrical lotus flower with layered petals sits at the centre of the chest, outlined in black and filled with ornate, lace-like detailing. The petals in the centre are shaded in soft pink, while the outer petals and surrounding patterns use dense black linework and stippled grey shading. The design is framed by white tape at the top corners of the image.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Okonedo's sewing machine had been losing its thread since the spring, and by August the Halloran & Vane Travelling Circus had more holes in its big top than canvas. I was the one who patched them. Nobody else on the field could make a stitch lie flat, my mother used to say, and she was right about that and wrong about most other things.

The commission came from Ruth Vane, who wanted one last thing before the lorries left Dorset: a lotus for the centre pole's crown, the sort of design her grandmother had painted on the wagon doors in Calcutta before the war. I drew it on brown paper at the kitchen table, petal inside petal, the pink centre left plain so the lamplight would find it. Then I spent three weeks in the cold of the horse barn cutting lace-work out of old black velvet, scalloping edges with pinking shears, stitching every tiny loop by hand because the machine would not do the fine work.

On the last night the wind came off the downs and the field went quiet. Ruth climbed the ladder with the panel rolled under her arm and tied it to the pole while the rest of the company stood below with their coats on, not speaking. When she gave the rope a tug the lotus opened in the dark, black lace against the grey canvas, its pink heart catching the one bulb we had left.

Nobody clapped. Ruth just looked up for a long time, then said, "Good. Now somebody take the dog to the van." I went back to the barn and sewed the last loop shut, because a thing finished is a thing you can leave.
