Black and grey mandala-filled Minnie Mouse head tattoo with a red bow on the stomach, with a 'There is no progress' script quote above it.

Mandala Minnie Mouse on the stomach

Geometric · Other · Mixed · Photo

A mandala-patterned Minnie Mouse head sits centrally on the abdomen, with its ears and face filled with fine, repeated circular ornament. The red bow is the only colour, and the rest of the design is in black and grey linework and shading. A scripted quote with flourished swirls, reading 'There is no progress', is tattooed above, and a partly visible line of lettering sits at the lower edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Ashdown never let anyone start a pattern from the centre. "Begin at the edge," she said, "and work inwards, or you'll end up with a hole in your ring." Tom had been at the bench in Burslem for eleven weeks and still his circles bulged like badly rolled pastry.

The order came from a hotel in Scarborough that wanted its floor relaid with a border nobody had seen before. Mrs Ashdown would not copy the old Victorian encaustic tiles from the crate in the back. She drew instead on a sheet of tracing paper: a round face, two ears heaped with rosettes, and between them a bow she coloured with the last of a tin of red glaze. "Silly," said Tom. "It's a mouse." "It's a rule," she said. "Every ring closes on the thing it started with."

The kiln ran for three days. When the tiles came out, the centre was a lotus of concentric circles, fine as lace, and the red bow sat at the very edge of the floor, where a guest would only find it by walking the length of the room. Tom asked why she had hidden it there. She only tapped the border with her thumbnail and said the ring had to come home.

Months later he laid the last tile himself in Scarborough, kneeling on a sheet of ply, and saw the red bow turn up under his knee exactly where the pattern began. He sat back on his heels and laughed out loud in an empty hotel lobby.
