The card was already yellowing when Maud Tranter pinned the last sheet to the frame, and Mr Hallam had come down twice from the office to ask why the Saturday order was still short. She did not look up. She had her pricker in one hand and the pattern taped to the board, and she was working outward from the centre, a dot at a time, the way her mother had taught her in the back kitchen off Lister Gate.

The design was a rosette of scrolled petals, arches stacked one behind another so that they seemed to lift off the card like the balcony tiers at the Palais, seen from the floor on a Saturday night. Each petal had its row of pinholes where the thread would later run, and every few inches a single dot marked a place where the lace would hold its breath. Maud had danced once under those balconies, with a fitter called Stan Ogden who trod on her hem and apologised so often she laughed at him until he laughed too.

By the time the lamp was lit she had pricked everything except the middle, a space no bigger than a thumbnail. Hallam leaned in the doorway and asked what it was for. She told him it was for whoever stitched the final petal, and that until they did, the pattern was not finished and could not be sold. He grumbled about the bell, but he did not take the card away.

She slid the frame to the edge of the bench where the morning light would catch the pinholes. Stan's sister would collect it on Monday, and by the Friday after, a collar made from it would go round the throat of a girl in green at the Palais, turning slowly under the lamps while the band played something slow.
