Mandala tattoo on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman lies on white bedding with her forearm extended across the frame, showing a black and grey mandala tattoo with layered floral petals and leaf-like shapes. The linework is fine and the shading uses soft grey tones and dense dotted texture within the petals. The tattoo is the main focus against the pale background, and the crop shows the arm and torso without the face.

Put the tea down and hold still, for the sand is only half laid and the lines will not forgive a shaking hand. Forty-one days the young monk Pema Gyatso sat in the cold hall at Sirwa, pinching coloured grit through a metal funnel, and forty-one days the old abbot walked behind him saying nothing but 'petal, petal, leaf.'

Every ring of the mandala had its own pattern: first the lotus petals, eight of them, then the leaves hanging between like green fingers, then the fine dotted shading that made the stone colour seem to breathe. Pema wanted it perfect. He worked until the lamp oil ran dry, and when at last he sat back, his wrist was black with soot and his eyes were full of grit.
On the final night he asked the abbot what the point was, if the wind would take it all by morning. The abbot laughed, took the brush from him, and drew a single curling petal on the back of Pema's hand with a dab of lamp black. 'Now you have one that will last as long as you do,' he said. 'Tell me, is that more or less than the sand?'
Pema did not answer. At dawn they swept the whole design into a tin bowl, carried it down to the river, and poured it out. The colours went brown, then went altogether, and the water carried them down toward the plains. Pema looked at his hand, where the black petal was already softening at its edges, and found that he was smiling.
