Mandala tattoo on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman's forearm and wrist show an ornate mandala-style tattoo in black ink. Layered circular motifs, scalloped borders, a small flower and paisley-like curls are built up with fine linework and stippled dot shading. The design is framed against a plain white door and a sleeveless white top, with the subject's face out of frame.

"You don't start a circle from the outside, Ruby," Nan said, slapping the pillow flat with her palm. "You start at the pin in the middle and work out, or the scallop won't close." Ruby had been at it since breakfast, and the thread had already snapped twice. The pattern lay on the table, a card pricked full of tiny holes that had gone soft and grey under forty years of thumbs. Nan called it the sun-in-the-hand, though it looked more like a pond with a stone dropped in it, four rings widening out, each one fringed with little bells of lace.

The mill had shut the spring before, and the whole street had gone quiet in the way a clock does when someone forgets to wind it. Nan kept working anyway. She said a lace that's been tied in a hurry shows its hurry for a hundred years, and she had no intention of being remembered for hurry. So Ruby sat with her, twisting bobbins in the window light while the cars went past outside, and learned that a mistake was not a disaster. It was only a knot that had to be worked into the pattern rather than cut out.
By the end of the week Ruby had a piece no bigger than a saucer. The scallops were uneven and one ring sat a little crooked, but when she pinned it to the window the sun came through and threw its shadow onto the white door across the room. Every petal and bell showed up there, sharp and pale. Nan leaned over, squinted, and tapped the glass. "There," she said. "Now it's finished. It's got somewhere to land."
