Small black mandala on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small black mandala design sits on the side of a lower leg, with a circular centre ringed by a dotted border and short radiating spokes with tiny teardrop tips. The linework is thin and even, and the design is filled with solid black ink and no shading. The photograph is taken at a slight angle, with yellow ballet flats at the bottom of the frame and a blurred background.

No, come closer, the wind up here takes half of every sentence and gives it to the goats. You want the story of the sun that would not cross? Good. My grandmother told it at this same post, with the same barrier arm rusting over her shoulder.

The clerk then was called Teodor Vassi, a thin man with ink under every nail. He drew a small sun on the back of every permit he stamped. Eight rays, a dotted ring around the middle, and a drop of ink at the tip of each ray for the rain that never came. The other officers laughed at him and called it his little wheel. He did not look up.
One February a widow named Ilinka came up the road with a goat-hair sack, a loaf wrapped in cloth, and a letter that had been folded so often it had gone soft as cloth itself. Teodor would not stamp it until she told him what the sun was for. She said the rays were roads. Each one pointed home to a village the new line had cut in two, and the drops were where the people had stood and wept, looking across. He counted the rays, then the drops, and understood the rest without being told.
He stamped her papers with the sun still on the back. The barrier arm stayed up that morning, and nobody lowered it again. If you look at the old permits in the archive down in the town, you will find the sun there in faded ink, pointing in all directions at once.
