Mandala tattoo on a thigh

Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A round, symmetrical mandala with petal-like shapes and radiating geometric patterns sits on the outer thigh. The design is built from fine stippled dots and clean linework, with shading that gives depth to the central motif. The photograph is taken at an angle with a warm, faded tone, and the thigh fills the left of the frame while a grey blanket and white fabric sit at the bottom.

The tide clerk at Scarrow Bay kept his ledger on the windowsill of the Gull and Lantern, and every spring he wrote down the names of the boats that had not come back. Nobody in the village had ever seen him sleep. What they had seen was the lamp in his window burning until dawn, and the flat grey sea below it, round and still as a plate.

His daughter Meg came down the cliff path one March with a satchel of her mother's silver and a letter from the Admiralty that said her brother was dead off the Dogger Bank. She asked him where the ledger said Tom was. The clerk turned the pages slowly, past the rows of names, past a drawing of a flower drawn in ink dots, a rosette of petals folded tight like a shell, and then he showed her a blank line with nothing written on it at all.

"The sea doesn't write down the ones it keeps," he said. "It only makes a pattern of them, the way the dots make a petal. You have to keep looking at the whole round of it."

Meg did not believe him. She walked the strand at low water for nine days, counting the petals of wet weed and the rings the rain made on the sand. On the tenth morning she found a brass button in a rock pool, the anchor pressed into it worn almost smooth, and she carried it back up the path in her fist.

The clerk was at the window. He took the button, turned it once in the light, and wrote Tom's name at last beside the blank line. Then he drew a small circle beneath it, and filled it, dot by patient dot, until the lamp went out.
