Ornamental floral thigh tattoo with dotted drops

Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink ornamental design of paisley-like petals, scrolls and a central teardrop motif sits on the outer thigh, with a chain of dots and hanging droplet shapes trailing downwards. The linework is fine and the shading is solid in places, with stippled dots adding texture. The design is set against purple fabric and a hand with a ring and small white flowers, and the ink has a soft, henna-like appearance.

The paste had to sit overnight or the stain came out pale and apologetic, so I was up before the lorries, squeezing the last cones on the bonnet of my uncle's van while the tarmac still held the cold. Sand had got into everything. I worked the nozzle in slow loops, starting at the centre where the teardrop would hold the eye, then letting the paisley petals curl outward the way my grandmother taught me, each stroke leaning gently into the next.

The road out of Dhanpur ran straight for forty kilometres with nothing on either side but scrub and a single water tower leaning like a tired man. A woman from the petrol station had asked for a design for her daughter's wedding, and she wanted the dots to fall away like beads on a thread. I told her the drops were the hard part. You leave them until last, I said, when your hand has steadied, because a shaky drop looks like rain on a windscreen.

By noon the paste had cracked to a crust and I scraped it off with a butter knife. The stain underneath was the colour of strong tea and it deepened as it dried, so that the petals seemed to glow darker than they had any right to. The woman held her arm out and watched it come up, asking whether it would fade.

I told her everything fades, but slowly, and in the order it was put on. The petals would go first, then the scrolls, and the drops at the very bottom would hold on longest, which seemed right to me, since they were always meant to trail behind the flower.
