Mandala pattern across a shaved scalp

Geometric · Other · Colour · Photo

A shaved head seen from behind, with a symmetrical ornamental design covering the scalp and extending down to the nape. The design uses fine lines and dotted fills to form nested arches, triangles and spirals, with the ink in a single warm orange-brown tone. The bare shoulders and back are visible below, and the plain light background keeps the focus on the pattern.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You learn the lines on the cabin doors before you learn the names of the locks. Uncle Ned sits you on an upturned coal box at Braunston with a tin of red ochre at your elbow and tells you the roses and castles are for the tourists, but the roundels and the cloths are for the boat. Paint what's already in your head, he says, then goes below to put the kettle on and leaves you with a tray of brushes and a jam jar of canal water.

The trouble is the spirals. Every curl you start drifts outward, and by the third arch the whole thing leans like a gate with a bent paddle. You scrape it off with your thumbnail and try again, and again, until the paint on the doorframe looks like something a wasp might have built. The lock-keeper at Hatton, a woman with a dog that won't stop barking, walks past, stops, and watches you for a full minute before she says anything.

Start in the middle, she says. Put a dot where the nail would go, then go round it one ring at a time, like you're pinning a pincushion. The dots fill the gaps and the arches fall into step by themselves. You do it. The rings close on the door one after another, and when Ned comes up with two mugs of tea the design is finished, a star of brown pins on the green paint. He doesn't say a word. He sets your tea on the roof, and in the jam jar beside it a moorhen slides past, and for a second the ripples carry the same spiral out across the lock.
