Shaded rose in a geometric circle on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A shaded black rose sits at the top of a thin circle, with fine geometric lines crossing through the circle and a small outlined diamond hanging below. The rose uses soft grey shading, while the geometric elements are drawn with crisp, fine linework. The tattoo is placed on the inner forearm against a pale textured wall, with the wearer's torso and black clothing partly visible.

Dear Hal, the chain came off the theodolite again on Tuesday, so I spent the morning on my knees in the bracken at the edge of Ashcombe Wood, swearing at a pin no bigger than a barleycorn. Mr Pell says a surveyor who cannot mend his own kit should take up hedging. I told him I would rather take up hedging than spend another winter measuring the Crane estate for a man who wants the oaks counted twice.

The real trouble is the circle. The old boundary stone at the north corner has a ring cut into it, and inside the ring someone has scratched a rose with lines running from its heart to the four points of the compass. Pell thinks it was a mason's mark. Mrs Okafor at the lodge says her grandmother called the lines roads, and the little point hanging below is where the spring comes up under the roots. I have drawn it four times now, and each time the lines refuse to meet where they should.
Yesterday I walked the boundary alone, past the place where the beeches give out and the ground goes soft and grey. A diamond of quartz lay in the moss, no larger than a pea, catching the light like a dropped lamp. I put it in my waistcoat pocket, then felt foolish, took it out again and set it back exactly where it had been, at the foot of the ring, the way the old stone shows it.
I think I shall come home on Saturday. Tell your mother the theodolite is mended and that I have taken the rose's measurements at last. The lines meet at the very centre, Hal, a place no one has ever marked on a map, and when I put my eye to it the whole wood seems to lean in and listen. Yours, Nell.
