Mandala tattoo on the thigh
Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A circular mandala with a scalloped outline of small dots sits on the outer thigh. Fine black linework forms layered petals, leaves and a central star-like flower, filled with dense stippling. The ink is solid black with no colour, and the design fills the centre of the frame against bare skin and a floral fabric in the background.

Dear Nell, The café at Corrigan Flats has shut its shutters for good, so I'm writing this on the back of a bus timetable while the driver argues with a farmer about rain that never comes. You'll say I should have turned back at Yarrow. Maybe. But Dolores, who ran the place with a radio and a tin of enamel pins, wouldn't let me leave without a look at her hubcaps.

She keeps them nailed along the back wall, dozens of them, dull chrome rubbed to mirrors. Each one has a ring of little punched dots around its rim, like a scallop on a pie crust. She said her husband cut them from a lorry that rolled off the Gorge road in 1974, and that he spent every evening after his shift hammering the old pattern back into the metal. The middle of each he left alone, a star of petals with leaves curling out between them, because, he told her, that's the bit that tells you where you've come from.
I asked which one he'd kept for himself. She pointed at the cracked one above the till, with a strip of faded ribbon threaded through a hole. Then she took it down, wiped it on her apron and held it out to me like a plate of biscuits. I said I couldn't. She said the road doesn't care what you can carry, and drove me to the bus stop herself in a truck that smelled of oranges.
I've got it wrapped in my coat now. Every time the sun catches the star in the middle I think of him bent over an anvil in the dark, and of her standing at the till waiting for the bus to go. I'll bring it home at Christmas. Don't fuss.
Love, Ruth
