Mandala tattoo on upper back
Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A person in orange robes is seen from behind, showing a circular mandala-style tattoo on the upper back, near the shoulder blade. The design has a central ring with a star-like motif, surrounded by layered bands of spikes, dots and fine decorative detail. The tattoo is in black ink on warm skin, set against the orange fabric and a dark, softly blurred background.

The harbour master came up the hill to Tobiah Penhallow's workshop on a wet morning in March, wanting a lamp that would hang in the chapel roof and throw a light the fishing boats could steer by when the fog came in. Tobiah was a lamp-turner and had never made anything round that did not begin at the middle, so he told the man to come back in a week.

He worked at the bench with his daughter Nell beside him, sweeping the brass filings into a tin. First he cut a true ring. Inside it he scratched a star of eight points, then a band of small teeth like the wash of waves on shingle, then another ring, then rows of dots that grew smaller toward the centre until they were no bigger than a pinhead. Nell counted the dots and got four hundred and twelve. Her father said the sea did not need counting to be kept, and went on cutting.
The lamp was hung on the first Sunday of April. That night a fog came down so thick a man could not see his own boots, and the Mary Ellen was out past the Gull Stones with her crew of six. Nell climbed the chapel steps with a candle and watched the light go up through the brass. On the wet stones of the harbour wall the pattern threw its shadows outward, and the eight points of the star stood out clear as fingers pointing at the one gap in the rocks. The Mary Ellen came through it at the turn of the tide.
Tobiah never sold a second one. Nell kept the paper template folded in her apron pocket, and when people asked her what the rings meant she said only that you start at the middle and go round.
