South America map tattoo on shoulder

Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A thin black outline of a circle contains the continent of South America, filled with stylised flowers and star shapes. Smaller star shapes sit inside the circle and at its edge, and the top of the circle is partly filled with clustered florals. The linework is fine and even, with the ink appearing as a single dark tone against warm skin and a yellow garment.

The cartographer's daughter in Santa Clara de Ouro had never seen the sea, so when the old map-maker died she inherited his one unfinished sheet, a globe drawn in ink on linen, with the continent of her grandmother's stories sitting in the middle of it. In the dry season the flowers came up in the high pastures, and she began pressing them between the pages of his ledgers. Violets, then thistle, then a yellow bloom that the goats would not eat. Each one she laid where the rivers ran, so that the land filled with petals and the stars she had drawn at the rim of the circle began, slowly, to answer them. The village said she was mad. The priest asked to see the sheet and went quiet when he saw the rivers ran uphill.

On the morning the first rains reached the valley she walked to the edge of the ridge with the linen folded under her arm. Below her the road ran away towards a line of grey that was not cloud. She unfolded the map against the wind and let it go, and it lifted, turning over and over like a leaf, until the sea took it and the stars and flowers went with it, and she went home with nothing in her hands but the scent of thistle.
