Mark Twain quote on the inner wrist

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey photograph of a raised hand showing a handwritten quote on the inner wrist. The quote reads "Sanity and happiness are an impossible combination", attributed to Mark Twain, in thin dark script that is set in several lines. The text is sharp and evenly spaced, and the greyscale image centres the tattoo against the pale skin.

Dear Win,

The big top came down on Tuesday in Market Drayton, and we have been folding canvas ever since. Mr Pemberton says the autumn takings will carry us to Doncaster, but I have done the sums on the back of the feed invoices three times now and they do not agree with him. I keep the ledger in the wagon with the spare bulbs and the lion's old blanket, which is the only dry place on the lot.

Osric has taken it hardest. He has been our clown for nineteen years, and he still does the pratfalls for the farm children who come round the field with their mothers, though nobody pays him for it now. Last night I found him sitting on the caravan step with a pencil, copying something out of the Twain book Mr Pemberton keeps for the long drives. He had got as far as the line about sanity and happiness being an impossible combination, and he had written it three times down the margin in capitals, as if the words might come out different.

"Well, which is it?" he asked me, quite seriously, with the greasepaint half off one cheek. I told him it was a joke, that Twain wrote it to make people laugh at themselves. He said that was exactly the trouble with jokes.

I am sending this with the Thursday post so you know I am all right. I have not decided whether I am staying with the show or coming home to you. Osric has asked me to hold the ladder while he paints the wagon name back on, and I think I will.

Love, Ada
