A crab outline is filled with the Maryland flag design, using a red cross and black and yellow diagonal quarters. The bold black outlines and flat fills are clear, with the claws and legs spread across the body of the crab. The image is a close crop with a plain skin background and no other elements.

Her grandfather had a saying for the ones that wore the state flag on their backs: black and gold quarters, a red cross down the middle, as if the bay had been issued its own paperwork. He said a crab like that had been born with a claim on the water and would fight you for it. Then it turned, slow, and walked the length of the deck to the stern and sat on the coil of rope where her father used to drink his coffee. Hattie hauled the next pot, and the next, and when she looked back the rope was empty and the water beside the boat lay flat and red-gold in the late light, as though someone had laid the flag on the surface and stepped away.
