Outline map shape with small red heart

Fine line · Ribs · Mixed · Photo

The image shows a fresh tattoo of a single-line outline of an irregular land shape, drawn in black with a slightly heavier line along the lower and right edges. A small red heart outline sits near the right side of the shape. The skin around the tattoo looks slightly reddened, and the shape fills most of the frame against a pale background.

The chart went soft at the folds before the ink did, so by the time Mrs Oddie brought it to the shop it had been carried in a coat pocket for three winters. She unfolded it on my counter with both hands, the way you would lay out a bandage. The coastline was her father's, drawn from memory on the back of a customs form, and the lower edge was where the sea had taken the road away.

I traced the heavier line with my thumb. Her father had pressed hard on the south and east, where the cliffs dropped straight into weather, and lightly on the north, where he had only ever seen the shore from a boat with the engine coughing. Near the eastern bend he had marked a small heart in red pencil, no bigger than a lentil. She asked whether I could make it stay. I said red ink fades faster than black, and she said she knew that, she had only wanted to ask.

I drew the outline again that afternoon, once on paper and once more on tracing vellum, and I kept the heart exactly where he had put it. When she came back for the copy she did not look at the lines. She looked at the pencil mark, which I had pricked through with a needle so it would hold its place. Then she folded the original along its old creases, slid it into her coat, and walked out into the rain, leaving the copy flat on the counter the way you leave something for someone who will not be back for it.
