Red cardinal perched on a branch
Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A red cardinal faces left on a thin brown branch, with shaded feathers, a black mask around the eye and a dark beak. The linework is soft and the shading gives the bird volume across its wings, chest and tail. The bird fills the centre of the frame against plain skin, with lace fabric along the top edge.

The bird came down to the hedge the morning after the thaw, and Mabel Crane, who had been counting the last of the salt pork in the larder, stood at the back door with the ladle still in her hand and watched it. It was the red of a hot poker, with a black mask pulled over its eyes like a sexton's veil, and it sat on the bare hazel switch as if the switch had been left there for it alone.

The village said the wood beyond the stile belonged to nobody, and whoever walked into it at the edge of dark would find the path had moved while they were not looking. Her brother Tom had gone in after a strayed heifer three days before and not come out. The bird was on the hazel every morning after that, facing the trees and not the houses.
On the fourth morning Mabel took a heel of bread to the stile. The bird turned its head to watch her, then flew ahead and lit on the alder, and waited until she caught up. It did the same at the split oak and at the water trough gone green with moss. At the far edge of a clearing she found a cart with one wheel off and Tom sitting against it, a rope knotted round his wrist and the heifer long since wandered off. He was thin and sensible and wanted to know why she had taken so long.
The bird rose into the oak and did not come down. Mabel brought her brother home by the path it had shown her, and wherever she saw a loose red feather lying in the leaf litter she left it where it was, so the way would show again. In spring one feather still hung on the stile, and nobody in the village ever swept it away.
