Stormtrooper helmet and geometric motifs on a calf
Geometric · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A large calf tattoo centres on a shaded stormtrooper helmet at the base, with a triangle emblem, a winged-style Rebel-type symbol at the top and a honeycomb hexagon pattern on either side. The helmet uses smooth grey shading for form, while the triangle and surrounding stars are built from fine dotwork and linework. The design is entirely black and grey and fills the leg from the top of the image to the ankle area, with a person in dark trousers and yellow trainers beside it.

Teo, the thing you left in the lean-to is still there, and I have stopped pretending it is a joke. Ferris dragged it out of the sand after the dust storm, a white dome with the eye slits gone grey, and he set it on the counter beside the sugar tin as if it had come to pay. Nobody on this road has paid us for a cup of tea since March.

The trucks still come, though not the ones we want. Last Tuesday a driver with a flatbed of wooden hives asked whether we sold water. I said we sold the view. He laughed and gave me a jar of honey for a pump of diesel, and I put the jar next to the helmet because there was nowhere else to put it. The bees had been building inside the crates for weeks, six sided rooms all the way down, every one full and sealed.
Ferris says the helmet needs a name. I told him it already has one, the triangle you drew on the back of the menu the summer before you went, with the stars crowded round it like guests at a wedding nobody invited you to. He says that is not a name, that is a diagram. He may be right. He has also started sleeping in the cab of the broken van, so I suspect he is bothered by it more than he admits.
I will clean the visor tomorrow with vinegar and see what is underneath. If the eyes come up black I will leave it as it is. If they come up light, I will hang it above the door and let the road look in. Write back and tell me whether the coast still has any sand, or whether it is all salt and gulls now.
