Masked slasher with knife on ribs

Ribs · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a pale, masked head with brown hair and a knife held in a blue-sleeved arm, with the figure arranged in a rounded, heart-like shape. Red splatter surrounds the design, and the shading uses soft gradients in blue, orange and flesh tones. The photograph is framed close on the torso, with the tattoo centred on the ribcage and a black top visible at the bottom edge.

Inside the cardboard, under tissue paper, was a rubber mask, pale as an unbuttered scone, with a sculpted fringe of brown hair and a slack, patient mouth. Someone had packed a kitchen knife beside it, the blade wrapped in a blue cloth sleeve, and a red felt-tip had drawn a heart around the lot. Ruth from the next desk said it was a prop. Ruth had said that about the sealed box in March, too.

I wrote it up as a prop and drove the crate to the bonded store behind the sheds. The night was flat and wet, and the sodium lamps turned the tarmac to spilt paint. When I got back to the cabin, the mask was on the desk, facing the window, the knife laid across the manifest like a bookmark.

I did not touch it. I phoned the duty inspector and read out the reference number twice, and the line went quiet in the way it does when someone is writing down something they don't like. Outside, the first lorry of the morning idled with its hazards blinking. Its driver flashed his headlights at me, slow and patient, as if he had all the time in the world.
