Teddy bear tattoo on the side ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A small cartoon teddy bear with arms and legs outstretched is tattooed on the side of the torso, beneath the armpit. The design is drawn with a thin, dark outline and has no shading or fill. The bear sits centrally in a close crop, with a navel piercing visible at the lower left.

Tuesday, 14 September. Room four has been empty since the Hartleys left on Saturday, and I have been up there twice today pretending to check the sash cord. Mrs Pryor from the chemist's says the wind off the bay will strip the gutters by Christmas, and I believe her. Still, the bed was made tight and the window shut, and under the washstand, pushed hard against the skirting, I found a bear.

He was no bigger than my hand, stuffed with the sort of kapok nobody makes now, and one of his button eyes hung loose on its thread. Someone had sewn him a red bow tie, badly, the stitches going every which way. I stood him on the mantel beside the gull's feather, meaning to post him on to Leeds, but I kept looking at him. He had the air of a creature left on purpose, arms and legs flung wide as if he had just jumped off the end of the pier and decided it was a fine thing to do.
Thursday. The Hartleys wrote back. Their boy never had a bear, only a spaniel called Biscuit, and Biscuit is asleep on the back seat as we speak. So whose bear is this? Mr Doyle, who has mended everything in this house since the war, only shrugged and said the sea gives back what it likes. I carried the bear down to the front and sat him on the rail facing the water, and a man selling ices laughed and asked if I had lost my child.
Sunday. I have pinned him above the washstand with a brass drawing pin, so his arms reach out into the room. Guests will ask whose he is, and I will say he belongs to nobody, which is nearly true. Mrs Pryor says I am getting soft. Perhaps I am. Tonight the wind knocked the window open and he swung on his pin like someone waving me in from the cold.
