Matching 477,800 number tattoos
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two identical tattoos of the number 477,800 in a simple, slightly slanted typeface. The lighter-skinned foreground tattoo sits on the forearm, and the second appears on skin further back in the frame. The linework is thin and solid, with no shading, and the ink is a dark blue-black. The photo is a close, casual phone shot with warm, slightly washed-out tones.

The brass clock in the lamp room had stopped at a quarter past four, and Marjorie Tull did not trust a clock that stopped, so she wound it again and wrote the figure in the log in her square hand. Four hundred and seventy-seven thousand, eight hundred. Her nephew Peter, who sold crab on the quay at Seahouses, thought it was daft. He sent postcards with the figure written on the back in biro, as though she might forget it, and once he came out on the supply boat with a tin of ginger biscuits and asked whether it was really the number of hours she'd spent up here. She told him it was the number of times the light had gone round for the ships. He said that was the same thing, only longer.
When the fog came in on the last Tuesday of October she climbed the iron stairs with her lantern, counting the steps out of habit, and found the lamp had gone dark. The old gears had seized. She knelt on the cold gratings with a spanner and her knuckles bleeding, and the gap to fill was only a few minutes of light before the Ardent came round the point. Peter's boat was out there somehow in the murk, having come anyway, and she heard his shout across the water as the lens began to turn again.
Afterwards she wrote in the log: 477,801. Then she laughed alone in the lamp room and let it stand.
