Nourish script on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of the inside of a wrist with the word Nourish tattooed in a thin, flowing script. The linework is fine and even, with the N and the o carrying small looped strokes. The image is black and white against a dark towel, and the lettering sits across the centre of the frame.

Dear Tomasz,

The sign came down this morning. Ruth had insisted on the word NOURISH over the hatch when we opened the caff on the Coldwater road, the one with the flowing letters she'd copied out from a seed packet. For nineteen years it has leaned above the tea urn while the lorries thundered past without slowing. I spent the morning on the stepladder with a flask of coffee going cold, working the screws out of the board one at a time.
Ruth would have made a joke of it. She always said the word looked like it was about to wander off down the lane. The n and the o had little looped strokes, a flourish she'd practised at the kitchen table until her hand ached, and I used to tease her that a word that fancy would never fill a plate. She filled plates anyway. Every driver who came in with a face like thunder left with a second slice of seed cake and somebody asking after his mother.
Behind the bracket I found a pencil note in her hand, dated the week before she went into hospital: Tell Tomasz the word is for the people who come in, not for us. He will argue. Let him.
So I am arguing, a little late, and I am not putting the sign back up. I am painting the hatch white, the way she wanted it before she ever thought of lettering. Come in August if you can. The door still sticks. Bring the boys. There is cake, and you are paying for none of it.
