Matching anchor and feather tattoos on two feet

Other · Mixed · Photo

The left foot has a watercolour feather in pink and blue, with a flock of small black birds rising from it and the script words I'll be your wings. The right foot has a shaded grey anchor with a rope, a wave line beneath it, small birds above, and the script words and I'll be your anchor. The photograph is taken from above on a dark wooden surface, with the two designs shown side by side.

The rigging lamps had been dimmed to save the generator, so Mireille could see her catcher only as a pair of pale hands rising out of the dark below the platform. "Again," Teddy called up. "Your timing's gone soft since Kendal." She didn't tell him the lowest bar had started to wobble on the last swing, or that she had felt it through her palms and said nothing.

The Pellow and Dunmore Travelling Circus had been losing towns since the spring. Bills went unpaid, the grey mare had been sold to a farm near Ledbury, and the ringmaster now raffled a bicycle that nobody in the company had ever seen. Teddy had been with the show longer than anyone. Once, in a tent that smelled of wet canvas in Shrewsbury, he had told her he would never let her fall. He said it the way men say things they intend to keep, and she had believed him the way she believed the sawdust would be swept before the doors opened.

On the final night she climbed without the safety line, because the line was for the paying crowd and the paying crowd was no longer coming. The bar held. She swung out over the sawdust, let go, turned twice in the blue light and reached for him. He didn't move to the net. He stood at the edge of the platform with his arms spread, the way you would wait for a bird that had forgotten how to land, and he caught her by the wrists just above the rope burns.

Afterwards, while the men struck the poles and the canvas came down in heavy folds like a sail being lowered, she found a white feather from her costume tangled in the coil of rope. Teddy was already at the tailgate of the lorry, holding the door open with one boot. She tied the feather to the rope where he would see it, and went down the ladder to him, and he didn't say anything at all.
