Mairead had kept the day watch at Scarrow Point for eleven winters, and she had never once seen the night keeper's face. What she had was his lamp. The notes came in the spring, folded into the tin that rode the rope between the two towers. The first was only a question about tide tables. The second asked whether she ever slept in the afternoons, and whether the sun on her wall woke her or merely reminded her of the day. She wrote back that the sun had never once asked permission. His reply came the next week, pencilled on the back of a chart: he had a habit of standing at the rail until the gulls went quiet, and he thought the dark was honest in a way that daylight wasn't.

Then the tin stopped arriving. Mairead sent three notes down the rope and got nothing but the wind. On the fourth evening she climbed the stair with the mirror in her coat, and when she reached the gallery the lamp on Gull Stack was dark for the first time in her life.

She waited until the stars came out. Then she turned her own beam to the stack and flashed the old signal, twice, slow. Across the water, after a long pause, a single answering spark came back, and she sat down on the cold iron step and laughed until she cried.
