Matching anchor tattoos behind the ears

Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

Two people are shown from behind, with their hair pulled aside to reveal a small black anchor tattoo on the neck behind each ear. The anchors are drawn in thin, even linework with no shading, and the ink is solid black. The plain background and close framing keep the focus on the two matching designs.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ada and Marit had not spoken since the spring flood took the lower ditch, when Marit's father said the clearing was Ada's to answer for. Now the snow lay so deep on Harrow Farm that the ewes could only be fetched by the rope path, and the two girls were sent up the top field together with one lantern and a sack of turnips.

They found the ewes in a hollow under the hedge. They also found, half buried where the wind had scoured the drift, a small iron anchor no longer than a finger. Nobody on the farm had ever seen the sea. Marit said it had come down the river in the flood, off some boat that had lost its hold. Ada said it was bad luck and should go back in the ground. They argued all the way down the hill, the lantern swinging between them, and neither let go of the rope.

At the gate the wind dropped and the stars came out hard over the barn. Ada's father stood there counting sheep, and when he saw the iron he only said that a thing pulled out of cold earth was worth whatever hand agreed to keep it.

That night, by the stove, the girls tried to prick the shape of it onto their necks with a darning needle and a little ink from the pen, each one doing the other's, laughing until the cat left the room. Next morning they walked out to the frozen ditch together and pressed the anchor into the mud, and the cold held it there, and neither of them went back for it.
