Matching angel wing tattoos with sibling script
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
Two people are photographed from behind, side by side, each with a matching angel wing tattoo over the shoulder blade. The wings are shaded in black and grey with layered feather detail, and script lettering runs alongside each wing. The plain tiled background keeps the focus on the two designs.

The lamp had gone dark three nights running when Nell took the paraffin can up the iron stairs, and I went after her because our mother had made me promise on the ferry, though I had never once managed to stop her doing anything. Gulls hung in the wind outside the glass like pinned paper. Below us the sea beat the rock in the same slow way it had beaten it when Grandad first climbed these stairs.

The wick had swollen in the damp. Nell knelt with her sleeves rolled and her hair tied up in a scrap of oilskin, and she said that if I was going to stand there I could at least hold the spirit lamp steady. I held it. She worked the brass key the way Dad had shown us, patient as a clockmaker, and I thought about the boat that had gone out from the mainland at dusk with the doctor aboard, and how a light is only ever a promise made to somebody who is out on the water.
When the flame caught it went up white and steady and threw our shadows across the gallery, two long shapes with the lantern between them. Nell sat back on her heels and looked at them, then at me. 'You're meant to be watching the sea,' she said. 'Somebody has to watch the sea while I watch you,' I said, and she laughed the way she had at seven, when I'd been the one to slip off the harbour wall.
The boat came round the point an hour later, its lamp answering ours. We never did learn who was aboard. But I remember that for the rest of the night I kept my eyes on the water, as I'd promised, and she kept hers on me, and neither of us cared to say which of us was keeping the other safe.
