Matching mother and daughter heart tattoos on backs

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

Two people are photographed from behind, each with a matching heart tattoo on the upper back that reads Mother Daughter in flowing script. The heart is shaded in soft grey with dark outlines and decorative scrollwork curling around the lettering. The tattoos are in black and grey, set against warm skin tones in a studio setting with the subjects framed side by side.

Now sit down by the stove, the pair of you, and mind the cat, because this is the one about Agnes Pell and the lamp at Scarrow Point. Her mother kept that light before her, and the rule of the house was older than the tower itself: the lamp is never let go dark, not for weather, not for grief, not for anything.

The winter Agnes turned eleven, the oil ran short and the storm came in off the Minch with the sea climbing the rocks like something hungry. Her mother was down with her chest, lying in the box bed with the shutters closed, and it fell to the girl to climb the hundred and twelve steps with the oil can on her back. She had counted them every night for years, so she knew the number even in the dark. Halfway up she stopped, because her arms were shaking and the wind was leaning on the glass, and she thought she would not make it.

Then she heard her mother's voice rising from the bottom of the stairwell, thin but certain, calling the count the way she used to when Agnes was small. Seventy-one. Seventy-two. Agnes climbed on, and when she reached the lamp room the great lens was cold and her fingers were numb as stone, so she filled the reservoir and lit the wick by feel alone.

When the beam swept out over the water, the fishing boats turned for home, every one of them, and the morning found Scarrow Point standing where it always stood. Her mother lived nine winters more. Agnes later pressed a small grey heart into the lamp room door with two words curling round it, and that is why, if you ever climb those stairs yourselves, you will find the number seventy-one worn smooth on the fourth step.
