Angel and demon wings with script on lower back
Realism · Back · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows two stylised wings on the lower back: a left wing with a gold halo above it and a right wing with a small dark horn-like point at its top. Both wings are shaded in black and grey with feathered, layered detail. Black script lettering sits beneath each wing, reading Angel for some on the left and Demon for others on the right, above a pair of low-rise denim waistband edges.

By noon the rain had got under the tarpaulins, and Maud Tulley had sold nothing but a handful of wet pigeon feathers. Her trestle stood between a man selling secondhand gas masks and a woman who mended umbrellas, and it was the umbrella woman who first noticed the two customers arriving together, one under a black golf brolly and one under nothing at all.

The first, a tall fellow with a starched collar, wanted a feather that would not drop in the wet. The second, shorter, with a grin that stopped well short of his eyes, wanted one that could be seen from across the road. Maud had only one good crow quill left, glossy as a beetle, so she split it down the shaft with her thumbnail the way her father had taught her to split a quill for ink, and she held the two halves up to the grey light.
She gave the starched collar the lighter half, the vane gone pale where the sun had got at it, and told the grinning one that the dark half would turn the head of anyone who looked. They paid in coppers, as everyone did on that street. Neither of them thanked her. Walking off, each held his half up to the sky, and the rain ran off them both without leaving a single bead.
Later, sweeping the water off the boards, Maud found two coins lying side by side in a puddle, one face up, one face down, and for the life of her she could not have said which of the two men had been the cheat.
