Matching arrow tattoos on fingers

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands are shown close together, each with a small black arrow tattoo on a finger. The arrows point diagonally with thin shafts and feathered fletching at the tail, drawn in simple fine line work with no shading. The ink is black against lighter skin, and the warm, mottled background fills the rest of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Tom, the last of the goose wing went into the drawer this morning, and I have cut the fletching for two shafts from it, the left and right feathers of the same pinion, which Father always said was the only honest way to pair a bow's arrows. You will laugh at me. I am writing this at the kitchen table of the boarding house on Marrow Strand, where Mrs Pell has let me have the back room by the range, because the ink freezes in the attic.

The man who came to ask for the pair was a Mr Ansell from the lifeboat house, who wanted them matched for his two boys, who are off to the Newfoundland fishing next spring. He wanted them to point the same way, so that anyone looking up from the cliff path would see the arrows and know which way the wind had been. I told him arrows don't point at the wind, they point where you mean them to go, and he said that was exactly his point.

I bound the shafts in thread a shade darker than I'd like and ran a thin line down each one so they would look like a single arrow cut in two. When I held them up to the window, the light came through the feathers and they looked, for a moment, like one bird with its wings folded. Mr Ansell paid me in coins and a jar of his wife's damson jam, and he carried the arrows off wrapped in sailcloth.

Write back and tell me whether the boys have come home. I have kept the offcut of the wing in my apron pocket, and I do not know why.
