Infinity symbol on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close view of a hand held up against a pale curtain, with a small infinity symbol tattooed on the side of one finger. The outline is thin and even, in dark black ink with no shading. The soft, bright background keeps attention on the tattoo, which sits near the middle of the frame.

Sit closer, the fire's only warm to the middle of the room. I'll tell you about the keeper at Scarrow Head, who wound the lamp every night for thirty-one years and never once let it go dark. Ambrose Quill was a plain man with ink under his nails and no patience for poets. Yet he would climb the iron stair with a lantern in one hand and a tin of oil in the other, and he would not hear a word said against the light.

The lamp was turned by clockwork that drew its power from a great brass weight, hung down the middle of the tower on a cable. Each night the weight sank, the lens went round, and each morning Ambrose hauled it back to the top by hand. One winter the cable frayed to a single strand, and he spliced it with wire until the join looked like a sideways eight, a thing with no start and no end. His daughter Nell asked him why he bothered with such a fussy knot. He said a loop could be mended a hundred times and still hold, which is more than a straight line can say.
Then came the February gale that took the rail and cracked the lantern glass. Ambrose was too ill to climb, so Nell wound the weight herself, counting the turns aloud the way he had taught her, one, two, out past the rocks and back again. Boats coming home through the black sea saw the beam sweep out and return, out and return, and steered by it.
By dawn the wind had dropped. Nell found a frost print on the cold glass where her thumb had rested, a loop that never closed, and she left it there for the gulls to see.
