Matching small symbol tattoos on two wrists
Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are clasped over a bed of green shrubs, and each wrist carries a small black tattoo of a simple symbol. The linework is thin and solid with no shading, and the tattoos are the only colour contrast against the skin. The close crop centres the hands, with the tattoos placed near the wrist on the outer arm.

They had agreed on it the winter before, on the back step of the Trent Street bakery, two girls who had never once agreed on anything: a small sign, a bird with its wings held low, meaning I am still here and the crossing is safe.

The river did not care for promises. That October the fog came up off the Humber so thick that the lamps on the far bank dissolved before they reached the water, and the Carrick went out without its pilot. Ada had gone ashore with the last parcel. Nell stood at the rail for an hour, counting the bells from St Mary's, one for every minute she was not sure of anything.
When the boat finally knocked against the piling, Ada's hand came over the rail first, the two marks lining up in the lamplight like a pair of birds settling on the same wire. Neither of them said a word about the fog. Nell only tipped the ledger toward her and pointed at the last line she had written, the one she had not been able to finish: Both crossed.
Ada laughed, a short startled sound, and closed the book for her. "Finish it properly tomorrow," she said. "The river will keep."
