Matching arrow tattoos on forearms

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two forearms show matching arrow tattoos, each with a feathered fletching at one end and a single word beside the shaft. The upper design reads double with the arrow pointing right, and the lower design reads trouble with the arrow pointing left. The linework is thin and solid black on pale skin, with simple shading in the fletching and a plain, evenly lit background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ada Pryce had the ink from Mr Hollis's kitchen table on the Saturday before the Whit fair, using a darning needle, a bottle of Indian ink and a sewing-machine bobbin for a stamp. Her cousin Lorna watched from the back step with her sleeve already rolled up, saying nothing, which in Ada's experience meant she was working out how much trouble she was willing to be in.

They had agreed on the arrows in the Co-op queue. Two arrows, shafts running in opposite directions, feathers at the back, the words written along the wood in Lorna's careful capitals. The arrow pointing right would say double, because that was what their mams said they were when they swapped coats and answered to each other's names at the chapel tea. The one pointing left would say trouble, because that was what the headmistress wrote on every report card in the school at the top of Front Street.

Ada pricked the first line on her own forearm while the kettle ticked on the range. It stung like a wasp and bled a little, and Lorna laughed so hard she had to sit down on the coal bucket. Then it was Lorna's turn, and Ada steadied the needle with both hands and tried not to think about her father coming up from the shift at four with his face grey as slate.

When the ink dried they held their arms side by side under the lamp. The arrows nearly met. Double flew one way, trouble flew back the other, and between the pair of them the kitchen seemed to tilt towards the window, as if the whole street had come out to see which of them would be sent to bed first.
