Small red heart wrist tattoos

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two people's wrists are shown in a warm, indoor setting, with the first wrist facing the camera and the second partly visible at the right edge. Each wrist has a small tattoo of a red outlined heart with thin black strokes placed above and below it. The linework is clean and simple, with the red ink used only for the heart outline and the black ink for the marks.

Nobody had swept the sawdust since Tuesday, and Ada Corran was still counting the empty seats when the rain found the holes in the big top. She crossed to the centre pole and tapped the code her father had taught her at six: four short strokes, then one long, held like a breath. Heart. Come home. The sound climbed into the canvas and died there.

Lew Corran had signed the last contract in the cab of the lorry, his hand shaking so badly the pen skipped. The Corran Brothers had once filled three rings and a sideshow tent in every market town from Hull to Penzance. Now there were two vans, one elephant nobody could afford to feed, and a field outside Boston where the grass had grown up round the wheels. Her father wanted the old signal sent to every van before he went, so the people who had worked for him would know the show was closing.

Across the field, a pan rang back. It was Teddy Sallow, who had played the bass drum for forty years and now cooked for whoever was left. Then a horn answered from the far van, a whistle from the cab, and the dog from the horse lines barked in time. Ada stood with her palm flat on the cool pole while the code went round the field from van to van, four and one, four and one, until the whole dwindling company was keeping time together in the rain.

At the caravan her father lay with the window open. She told him the answers had come. He smiled, shut his eyes, and in the quiet she could still hear Teddy's pan going, slower now, the way a heartbeat does when its work is nearly done.
