Three matching triangle tattoos on forearms

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Three forearms are shown together, each with a small stack of three triangles on the inner forearm. The triangles are drawn with thin, clean outlines, and some are filled with solid black or grey shading while others are left as open outlines. The photograph is taken straight on against a dark background, with a small piece of script lettering visible near the wrist of the middle arm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The theodolite had been sulking since Hebden Bridge, so Mr Aske and I spent the first morning on Scar Top arguing with its brass screws while the cloud came down over the moor. Three stations, he said, were all the county would pay for, and a triangle was the only shape that would hold a true line across the dales without wobbling. I drew them in ink on the back of the ledger as we went, one above another, the way a man stacks cups he means to carry home.

By the end of July we had set three pillars of dressed gritstone, each at the apex of a figure we could close to within a hair. Aske filled his triangles solid when a station gave a clean reading and left them open when the wind had shaken the instrument. He said the ledger was honest that way. I copied him, though my hand was shakier and my shading came out grey where his came out black.

In September the fog took Aske on the descent from Cold Edge. They found his hat in the beck and his notebook folded under a stone at the third pillar, open at a page of figures that did not quite add up. I walked the three stations alone the following spring, carrying the theodolite like a child, and at each one I inked the triangle that was owed.

The last pillar still stands above the reservoir. When I measured it again last year the figures closed perfectly, which is more than I can say for the rest of us. The top triangle on the ledger is the only one I left open, because somebody ought to be still coming up the hill.
