Matching arrow tattoos on wrists
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two small arrows in thin black linework point upwards, one on each inner wrist, with the wrists held close together. Each arrow has a triangular head, a single straight shaft and three chevron fletchings in plain outline with no shading. The skin is warm toned, the background is soft and out of focus, and the two designs are mirrored and sit at similar heights in the frame.

The fletcher's daughter at Holm Ash had cut two arrows from the same ash stave the spring the river flooded, and she gave one to her cousin Maud before the cousin left for the mills in Calder. Both shafts were straight as rain, both had three goose feathers bound in waxed thread, and both were tipped with a head of hammered iron that Maud's father had made so the points would sit true in a deer's shoulder.

Maud took hers to the mills and kept it under her bed in the dormitory, where the overseer's wife found it and asked whose it was. Maud said it was her cousin's. The woman said an arrow with no bow was a poor thing to keep, and Maud said that was the point of it, a thing that needed another hand to be useful.
In the hard winter the cousin at Holm Ash walked the ridge path every evening and loosed her arrow into the dark over the valley, where it could not be found, because the arrow was never meant to be found. It was meant to fly toward the one who held the other. When the thaw came, Maud walked home carrying her arrow up the same path, and at the stile she saw a single shaft lying in the frost with its head pointing toward the village, and she knew her cousin had been sending hers every night in the same direction.
