Matching infinity and arrow wrist tattoos

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two wrists are shown side by side, each with the same tattoo: an infinity symbol with an arrow passing through it and the letters R and K on either side. The linework is thin and even, in black ink with no shading, on a soft, slightly out-of-focus background. The left tattoo is larger and sits on a darker skin tone, while the right is smaller and framed by a knitted sleeve.

The arrow had been lodged in the reed bed for three days when the ferryman's boy came running up the bank to say it was still shivering. Rosalind wiped her hands on her apron and walked down with him. Nobody in Fennick Moor could remember a shot that long, not since the old king's time, and nobody had ever been asked to fetch one back.

The king had decreed that the marsh border would be settled by a single arrow loosed from the high tower across to the far bank, and whoever's arrow fell nearest the stone would own the water meadows. Kit, her cousin by marriage, had drawn the bow, and the wind had carried the shaft into the reeds. Rosalind pulled it free from the mud. Bound along the shaft in red thread was a loop tied into the shape of a figure eight lying on its side, and through it ran a second line of thread. It was their knot, the one they had sworn over in the cold kitchen the winter they were twelve.

She could carry the arrow to the king and claim the meadows for the Vanes, or she could hand it over as it was. She thought about how the knot had never been meant to hold a claim, only a promise that whichever way an arrow flew, it would come back to the hand that made it. So she turned the shaft in her fingers until the fletching pointed toward the tower, and she untied nothing.

At dusk she set the arrow against the tower wall beside Kit's, both fletched with the same grey goose, and walked home with the meadows still unclaimed and the river running both ways.
