The tide has come up over the old Trocadero again, so you take the long road through the reed beds, the way your mother showed you, counting iron stumps where the lamp posts once stood. Your sister walks ahead with the survey pole across her shoulders. Neither of you speaks much. The sky is the colour of wet slate, and the gulls hover above the brackish water without ever seeming to flap.

Every child in the river settlements learns the two marks before they learn their letters. The first is a lattice spire standing on a bank of silt, its feet sunk so deep that only the upper third shows, tilted like a dropped pen. The second is a needle on the far shore, so tall that cloud crowns it most afternoons. Between them runs a red line on the charts, a crossing no ship has made since the grid failed.

At the footbridge you unfold the chart on a flat stone and sight along it with your thumb and forefinger, spire on the left, needle on the right, the bearing the old navigators called true. Your sister laughs and says the sea has shifted the lines again. She is probably right. The ink has faded to the colour of rust, and the coast it describes has been rearranging itself for longer than anyone's grandmother can remember.

You fold the chart and walk on towards the needle anyway, because the line was never really about water. Behind you the spire sinks another inch into the silt, and ahead the top of the needle catches the last light and holds it, as if somebody on the far side has left a lamp burning for you.
